Why "Masker"?

In college, I was a member of a sorority that was known as Maskers. There were 11 of us girls, all juniors, and 11 seniors. I was the 1997-1998 Masker #7. It was a highlight of my college years and I have used it for computer user ids since then. In the 10 years that have followed, however, I am learning the value of taking off the fake "Mask" and being true and authentic with myself and others. THAT is the purpose of my blog.

Legally Blonde: The Musical

I'm totally in love with this reality show on...GASP...MTV. (I promise, Mom...I'm not watching any of their evil secular music videos!). It's a show about looking for the 'perfect' lead to play Elle Woods in the Broadway musical, Legally Blonde. Now, I've never even seen the movie with Reese Witherspoon but those of you who know me may guess that I have a theatric side and LOVE all things Broadway! Do yourself and favor and check out this musical and the reality show. My favorite parts are with Elle's sorority sisters--they're like a Greek Chorus (similar to the muses in Disney's Hercules for those of you who don't know Broadway but are Disney experts!) and perform a lot of high energy songs.

How I wish the cutest sorority song wasn't titled "O mi god". It's super catchy to sing but I do NOT want to teach Cassie that song when I'm humming it and have her singing in her baby voice, "oh my god"...we'll save her introduction to that song until AFTER we teach her the whole 10 commandments about not taking God's name in vain. If you disapprove of even me listening to it, you can start praying for God to convict my heart now. :)

Speaking of Cassie...there's another "bad" thing about this reality show (I'm really doing a good job of 'selling' this to you, huh!?!). There are 2 girls named Cassie in the cast and one of them is...obnoxious, to put it kindly. WHHY does my sweet and precious Cassie have to be associated with this annoying Broadway hopeful!?! Grrr...almost makes me want to start using Cassie's full name of Cassidy!

Reddy, set, GO!

Wanna hear some good news about my baby? When she was at the doctor on Friday, her ears looked fine and we began treating her for the asthma, fever, etc. but this morning, as I was dressing her she told me, "Mommy, ear" as she was touching her ear. "That's right, Cassie...that's your ear" I said, but then I thought it was odd that she decided to identify a random body part so I mentioned it to the doctor at our followup appointment this morning. Lo and Behold, guess who has the VERY first stages of an ear infection in the same ear that she was touching this morning!?! We've started her on the antibiotic and hope she'll be healthy for the road trip this Saturday.
What a blessing to have a little one who tells me when something is wrong...how I pray that Tim and I will learn the same sort of honesty with each other--the courage, confidence and security to say when something hurts or is uncomfortable! I just think that was a great 'life illustration' about NOT ignoring pain!

One final tidbit: Cassie's doctor is Amy Reddy. When we took her in on Friday, Cassie SCREAMED, cried, whaled and made herself sick at the visit from all the emotion. So this morning I wanted to be sure to 'prepare' her for what was ahead--I told Cassie we were going to visit "Dr. Reddy." Cassie's response (a sure sign that she's feeling better), "ohhhh...Dr. Reddy, set, GO!" She was happy from that point on, played happily in the office and when she heard Dr. Reddy's voice in the hallway as we were waiting in the examination room, she said, "Dr. Reddy, set, Go" and banged on the door to see her! Isn't that adorable, or am I just a gushing Mom!?! We'll be going back to visit "Dr. Reddy, Set, Go" in a few weeks-after we finish the 10 day antibiotic treatment.

Nebulizers and Road Trips and Fathers

June has been very busy with lots of weekend trips and with Cassie being sidelined with a horrible asthma condition. I'm uncertain as to whether it's appropriate to take her to the nursery so we've stuck pretty close to home lately. Her nebulizer treatments are a life-saver since without them she's gasping for air. Very sad to watch-but she's also slowly, but surely getting better. Today is another doctor's appointment--hopefully we'll get more steroids to help open up her little lungs.

We have a big roadtrip planned for this Saturday...about 2 weeks of girl-travel with my sister, Cassie and me. We're going to Atlanta, Mississippi and Tennessee. Should be 'interesting' to have Cassie in the car for such long distances...we're planning on being very flexible and relaxed about how much we drive each day and how long we rest in between. The trip is to celebrate my sister's big accomplishment--She's quit her job! It's big news for her to leave her high level position at the White House (this little sister thinks the world of her big sis!), but she finally determined that it wasn't worth all the misery (I TOTALLY agree!). She doesn't have any other job lined up because she's planning to do a total career shift. Hooray!

After we get back from the Southern road trip, I'll be going up to New York to do a week with my ICS teaching buddy, Rachel Reno. I think Cassie will stay home with my sister, my Mom and Tim all taking turns watching her. It's SUCH a long time without my baby--I'm not sure if I should be so "extravagant" but I also long to have the time with my kindred spirit-friend!

Finally, Happy Father's Day to the men in Cassie's life--Uncle Matt, Poppi and Daddy!

Stress--Cod vs. Catfish

A great email from Steve Arterburn (ETA: My mom said, WHO is Steve? http://www.newlifelive.tv/ Sorry, thought EVERYONE listened to New Life Live on Christian Radio...it's a counseling call-in-show...I cringe to hear all the people's problems, but I can't stop listening! I usually get a lot from their programs though so I try to listen daily once I put Cassie down for her nap).

Stress ...we don’t want to live with it, but if you don’t have any, your local address is probably the local cemetery. And, if you find that your conversations often begin with “Put the gun down, and then we can talk,” or if you’re trying to get your four-year-old to switch to decaf, then you probably need some help. You know, we’ve been programmed to believe that stress is bad and that we should do everything we can to eliminate it. But that’s not really true. Sure, we live in a day and age where we have more things coming at us at a faster pace than ever before, and in many instances levels of stress are out of control. But without stress, we wouldn’t be on top of our game. We wouldn’t make sure the reports we have to do were done at all, let alone on time. Without it our kids would never make their beds or clean their rooms. Without it, we’d probably end up couch potatoes with zero intellect and without a life ...looking forward to and laughing at the funny commercials on TV as the highlight of our day. But even then, we’d probably stress out over who controls the remote!

Chuck Swindoll told a story once of the cod fish. Some years ago the cod fish industry in the east was booming. So the owners of one of the processing plants decided to take the cod fish west. And they did so by freezing the fish and shipping it frozen. What they discovered though was that when the fish arrived here in the west and was thawed and cooked, it had lost its flavor. So, wanting to persevere and take advantage of the big population out west, the processor decided to ship the fish live, in big tanks of water. One shipment arrived and when they prepared the fish, it was mushy—it had lost its firm texture and some of its flavor as well. But a second shipment arrived, and when they processed it, it was firm and delicious ...it tasted just like the fish did back east. What happened? What was different in the two shipments of fish? Well they discovered that in the second shipment there was a catfish in with the cod fish, and the catfish is the natural enemy of the codfish. It seems that the presence of the catfish with the codfish caused the codfish to be on the alert—to be swimming around and not just sitting there, lethargically, turning into mush. So it is with us. Sometimes God allows or puts us into circumstances and relationships where we’re the codfish and we have a catfish in our lives. It’s a nuisance we’d rather not have, but it’s something that keeps us on our toes …alert, aware, and ready to respond. It’s a healthy stress for us.
